Introduction

“You are not here merely to make a living. You are here in order to enable the world to live more amply, with greater vision, with a finer spirit of hope and achievement. You are here to enrich the world, and you impoverish yourself if you forget that errand.”

— Woodrow Wilson.

It certainly would seem that the last thing that the world needs is another art critic. So I won’t pretend to be one. So why start an online journal now? In the vast world of the internet noise, why would anyone care about what I have to say? Perhaps no one will, but that doesn’t devalue my intent. Just as I have done art for my own pleasure and meditation, I journal here to articulate my thoughts. If these words are useful to another, then I consider myself fortunate for having been able to offer something back to the community that has given me so much. If not, oh well. I am going to do it anyways.

There are several factors that have brought me to publishing this blog. (1) My daily life is flooded with text messages, instant messages and memos. Rarely do I have a chance to actually write a complete sentence, let alone a cogent essay. This forum will be a vehicle to help me retain my fluency in English, surrounded by a world of l33t speak. (2) I have been journally for years. I include my sketches, my thoughts, and images of art that inspires me. And these journals accumulate year after year, never meant to be read. I will continue to maintain these private journals, but there remains some thoughts and images that are best shared. This will be a public forum for me to share my sketches in various mediums, that may or may not make it to a refined piece of art. (3) There is so much wonderful art out there, it seems a shame for art that inspires me to not to be shared with a wider audience. The corralary to this is that there is a plethora of bad art out there. I make no platitudes about there is “no bad art”, just opinion and preference. I assert that there is not only poorly executed art, but also lazy art. For all of this, I label it “bad”, and it causes me physical pain to see the wonders of the world ignored while the benign is celebrated as genius. This journal is a opportunity for me to showcase that which inspires me, not to malign others.

So, with my manifesto stated, my hope is that this blog informs and inspires.
